A photojournalist tells a story through photographs. Collecting, editing and publishing images that reveal a truth and explore a story is a profound experience; a clash of creativity, storytelling and chance. As a budding photojournalist, I’m beginning to understand that photojournalism is a mission to capture life’s narrative in the seconds that matter, the moments that tell.
My earliest exposure to photojournalism was a documentary on Gordon Parks and the iconic images he produced for Life Magazine. His life and body of work still inspire me to pick up a camera and tell a story. When I look at the portfolio of local staff photographer for The Gainesville Sun, Brandon Kruse, I realize how many stories and perspectives are all around me here in Gainesville, Fla.
Innovation, accuracy and timeliness govern the world of photojournalism. Today’s photojournalist must cultivate a fascination with the ordinary as well as the thrill of the newsworthy.
This blog will explore the professional world of photojournalism through a novice’s eyes. The blog will delve deeper and deeper into the culture of photojournalism. I want to tap into the photojournalism community and document my own progress on the road to becoming a good one.
